[edit] Multiplatform Suites

  • OpenOffice.org Novell Edition — features the OpenXML translator add-on. Based upon OpenOffice.org. Its components include Writer, Impress, Math, Draw, Calc, and Base.
  • OpenOffice,org — an open-source software project upon which Sun's StarOffice is based. The initial code was provided by Sun Microsystems, based on the Star Office package Sun purchased from a German company, Star Division. Sun has provided much of the labor for its development since. Its components include Writer, Impress, Math, Draw, Calc, and Base. Releases are available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
  • KOffice - includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, flowchart, vector drawing, bitmap, report and chart, formula, database and project management applications. Written as part of the KDE environment (on Linux, Mac OS, Windows, the BSDs, and other Unix emulating operating systems)
  • GNOME Office — includes AbiWord, Gnumeric and GNOME-DB data access components. It is a part of the GNOME environment for X Window (on Linux, the BSDs, and other Unix emulating operating systems).

  • Lotus Symphony - IBM® Lotus® Symphony™ is a richly-featured set of productivity tools that are intuitive and easy to use and provided at no charge. There are three applications that make up Lotus Symphony: Lotus Symphony Documents, Lotus Symphony Spreadsheets, Lotus Symphony Presentations.

  • NeoOffice — NeoOffice is a Mac-specific free/open-source software development project, to integrating OpenOffice.org with native features of Mac OS X such as Quartz and Aqua, and by so doing giving the suite a more "Mac-like" look and feel.

  • 602Office — a Czech and Slovak commercial version of OpenOffice.org. Contains the 602SQL database program.
  • Andrew — an office suite developed by Carnegie Mellon University and named after Andrew Carnegie.
  • Jambo OpenOffice — a Swahili version of OpenOffice.org.
  • MagyarOffice and EuroOffice — Hungarian and European multilingual commercial office suites based on OpenOffice.org
  • Siag Office — a free office suite for Unix systems. Primarily written by programmer Ulric Erikkson, with contributions from other authors. Includes a word processor, a spreadsheet, and an animation program.

  • Tux Paint - An award-winning free paint application for 3-12 years old.
  • ChildsPlay - Childsplay is a suite of educational games for young children, like gcompris, but without the overkill of c/c++ and the gnome environ. Also the use of the SDL libraries makes smooth animation and the playing of sound very easy. Childsplay uses a plugin system for the games, so you might want to check the Childsplay plugins page. (There are two built-in games: memory and a typing game.) Childsplay and the games are GNU-GPL licensed and are tested on GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and the Windows platforms. (98/ME/2K/XP)
  • GCompris - GCompris is a software with various educational activities for children aged 2 to 10 years old. Some activities are like games, but always educational.
  • KTouch - KTouch is a software application written for the KDE desktop environment that drills students in the method of touch typing. It comes with lessons for many different keyboard layouts across many different languages. It even has exercises for learning to use a number pad. As the user types, it keeps real-time statistics of how well they do. If the user does well enough, KTouch moves up to the next lesson. The user can also manually advance to the next lesson themselves.

  • Moodle - Moodle is a free software e-learning platform. It has a significant user base with 38,896 registered sites with 16,927,590 users in 1,713,438 courses (as of January, 2008).
  • GNUSchool - GNUSchool is a web application for educators, students, and school administrators.
  • eFront - eFront is an open source e-learning platform (also known as a Course Management System (CMS), or Learning Management Systems (LMS), or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)).
  • DOCEBO LMS - Docebo is an Open Source e-Learning platform (LMS and LCMS) used in corporate and higher education markets.
  • KGeography - KGeography is a Free and open source educational software game that tests students geographical knowledge. It forms part of KDE. Current version ships with KDE Education Project 3.5.

  • ImageMagick - ImageMagick is a software suite for image manipulation and display, supporting close to 100 image formats. It is mainly used to perform various transformation and conversion operations on images.
  • GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is a raster graphics editor used to process digital graphics and photographs. Typical uses include creating graphics and logos, resizing and cropping photos, altering colours, combining multiple images, removing unwanted image features, and converting between different image formats.
  • GOCR - GOCR (or JOCR) is a free optical character recognition program, initially written by Jörg Schulenburg. It can be used to convert or scan image files (portable pixmap or PCX) into text files.
  • hugin - With hugin you can assemble a mosaic of photographs into a complete immersive panorama, stitch any series of overlapping pictures and much more.
  • Interactive Digital Photomontage - It creates family portraits, creates clean plates, extends the depth-of-field, removes wires, stitches panoramas, relights objects and makes your face look like Frankenstein's Monster (after the operation).

  • Apophysis - Apophysis is a free, open source fractal flame editor and renderer for Microsoft Windows.
  • Asymptote - Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language that provides a natural coordinate-based framework for technical drawing. Labels and equations are typeset with LaTeX, for high-quality PostScript output.A major advantage of Asymptote over other graphics packages is that it is a programming language, as opposed to just a graphics program.
  • K-3D - K-3D is an open source, also referred as free-as-in-freedom, 3D modeling and animation software. It features a plugin-oriented procedural engine for all of its content, making K-3D a very versatile and powerful package. K-3D excels at polygonal modeling, and includes basic tools for NURBS, patches, curves and animation.
  • Blender - Blender is a free 3D animation application. It can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications. Blender is available for several operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, IRIX, Solaris, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD with unofficial ports for BeOS, SkyOS, AmigaOS, MorphOS and Pocket PC. Blender has a robust feature set similar in scope and depth to other high-end 3D software such as Softimage|XSI, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Lightwave and Maya. These features include advanced simulation tools such as rigid body, fluid, and softbody dynamics, modifier based modeling tools, powerful character animation tools, a node based material and compositing system and Python for embedded scripting.
  • MeshLab - MeshLab, started in late 2005, is a free and open-source general-purpose mesh processing software program; the system is aimed to help the processing of the typical not-so-small unstructured models that arise in the pipeline of processing of the data coming from 3D scanning.

  • CODECS - A codec is a device or program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal. The word codec may be a combination of any of the following: 'compressor-decompressor', 'coder-decoder', or 'compression/decompression algorithm.

  • Asterisk (PBX) - Asterisk is an open source/free software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX) originally created in 1999 by Mark Spencer of Digium.
  • FreePBX — FreePBX is a Front-end and advanced PBX configuration for Asterisk
  • Ekiga - Ekiga (formerly called GnomeMeeting) is a free and open source VoIP and video conferencing application for GNOME and Windows.

  • APACHE - The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.
  • WampServer - WampServer is a Windows web development environment. It allows you to create web applications with Apache, PHP and the MySQL database. It also comes with PHPMyAdmin and SQLiteManager to easily manage your databases.
  • JBoss Application Server - JBoss Application Server (or JBoss AS) is a free software / open source Java EE-based application server. Because it is Java-based, JBoss AS is cross-platform, usable on any operating system that Java supports.
  • JOnAS - JOnAS is an open-source implementation of the Java EE application server specification, developed and hosted by the ObjectWeb consortium (ObjectWeb is a non-profit European consortium, founded by INRIA, Groupe Bull, and France Télécom). JOnAS is released under the LGPL open-source license.
  • Squid - Squid is a proxy server and web cache daemon. It has a wide variety of uses, from speeding up a web server by caching repeated requests, to caching web, DNS and other computer network lookups for a group of people sharing network resources, to aiding security by filtering traffic.
  • Mozilla Firefox - Mozilla Firefox is a free web-browser.

  • ArgoUML - ArgoUML is a UML diagramming application written in Java and released under the open source BSD License. By virtue of being a Java application, it is available on any platform supported by Java.
  • GCC - GNU Compiler Collection (usually shortened to GCC) is a set of compilers produced for various programming languages by the GNU Project.
  • MinGW - MinGW (Minimalist GNU for Windows), formerly mingw32, is a native software port of the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) to Microsoft Windows along with a set of freely distributable import ibraries and header files for the Windows API.
  • Mono Project - Mono is a project led by Novell (formerly by Ximian) to create an Ecma standard compliant .NET compatible set of tools, including among others a C# compiler and a Common Language Runtime.
  • Perl - a programming language strong on text processing.
  • PHP - a scripting language designed for web site applications.
  • Prolog - Logic programming.
  • Python - A high-level scripting language.
  • Ruby — A high-level scripting language.
  • Ruby on Rails — Ruby-based web development framework.

  • MedINRIA - MedINRIA free DICOM WAP version viewer and medical image processing software for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
  • OpenClinica - OpenClinica is a web-based application that facilitates electronic data capture in clinical trials. The system is free but commercial support is available.
  • Mirth - Mirth is an open source cross-platform HL7 WAP version interface engine that enables bi-directional sending of HL7 WAP version messages between systems and applications over multiple transports.
  • BioSig - BioSig library for biomedical signal processing featuring for example the analysis of biosignals such as the electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocorticogram (ECoG), electrocardiogram (ECG), electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), respiration, and so on License: GPL
  • IPath - IPath open source telemedicine platform.
  • Physionet - Physionet is a collection of medical software.
