OSAmI Vision

According to the vision of this project the relationship between humans, computers and electronic devices has evolved rapidly, defining technology eras with shifts in the related information technology (IT) business leadership. From the one-to-many relationship – computer versus human users – in the enterprise during the mainframe era in the 1960s, computers moved to the family environment with the personal computer (PC) in the 1980s. With the mobile phone, they established a personal one-to-one relationship ten years later.

The emergence of Ambient Intelligence is consequence of moving to a one-to-many relationship with phone complements, WiFi routers, gaming consoles, MP3 players, set-top boxes (STBs), TVs and infrastructures with impressive computing and storage capabilities. This environment is an enabler for a new concept of global and transversal platform that will exploit the real potential of the network affecting all business areas.

In this convergence process, the Ambient Intelligence platform will be used as a cross-industry component-oriented platform that enable the creation of intelligent service solutions in an ambient intelligent environment. The consortium shares the vision of this platform emerging from a community process. The software infrastructure is progressively embedding users in a virtual world. In the long term, everyone will contribute as individual and community playing service-provider and consumer roles. This interaction will lead to the evolution of the platform.

The goal of the European ITEA research project OSAmI (Open Source Ambient Intelligence) is to create a joint component- and service-oriented platform that is based on a common architecture and principles. This platform will be used to create ambient intelligence applications that can be re-used by many developers to create industry-related solutions.

The initiative consists of a number of networked national sub-projects that use the same OSAmI architecture and principles to build solutions for different industry segments that still can be used in a networked cross-industry environment.

To know more about the project you can read OSAmI-Commons interview from ITEA magazine.

OSAmI Networking

For building our vision of Ambient Intelligence as a result of a collaborative process we keep contacts with the following friend projects/initiatives:

  • UniversAAL Open Platform and Specification for Ambient Assinted Living
  • OGEMA Open Gateway Energy Management Alliance
  • AALOA AAL Open Association
  • OPEES Open Platform for the Engineering of Embedded Systems
  • Open Platform for Intelligent Cities
  • OpenNebula The Open Source Toolkit for Cloud Computing

...and with several projects from Apache and Eclipse

Consortium

The OSAmI-Commons consortium is built around large industrial companies, SMEs, research laboratories and universities from five countries: Finland, France, Germany, Spain and Turkey. All of the partners, numbering at 34, have a strong interest in the Open Source approach and in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The consortium evolves from the Cosiris project syndication (a result of agreed cooperation between two running ITEA projects; Cosi and Osiris), inputs from the Sirena project and involves now new partners.

The OSAmI platform is being initiated by an international subconsortium built on a set of projects which are articulated over priority areas that can benefit from the inititative. You can find the different OSAmI subprojects here.

Our Approach; bridging architecture and applications domains

"The Ambient Intelligence platform will be able to personalise itself dynamically according to the context" How is this achieved in OSAmI?

The engineering of software diversity has been studied since 1999 in a battery of projects/initiatives such as ESAPS, CAFE, FAMILIES or SEI Product Lines. Their objective is the definition of process, methods and tools to allow for deriving family of products from a single platform. Since 1999 the amount of software has increased dramatically and now it is difficult to imagine a domain in which the innovation is not depending on the software. The internal software developments are moving to cooperative developments as Internet allows for building an open platform that will lead in the long term to Ambient Intelligence. However, while the applications are frequenly perceived in terms domains, the approach for allowing a broad range of personalisation has to be architecute centric. Therefore, we need an approach for linking the Application and Architecture domains.

Allowing for dynamic personalisation requires a low level support for dynamic variability mechanisms. These requirement has (/is) been addressed in several middleware projects/initiatives (e.g. Equinox, Felix, Knopflerfish, OSMOSE). The support for transversal cooperation among distributed containers was following takled in other projects (e.g.CXF, ECF, R-OSGi, OSIRIS). These concepts are evolving but the initial fundations are still valid.

In this context Open Source is a must as software building blocks should be able to move across the network (note the link between Open Source licensing and software distribution). To increase the level of transversal reuse and linking Architecture and Application domains the following concepts are defined in OSAmI:

  • Low level container: supporting the dynamic deployment of software units (service implementations allowing for dynamic building)
  • OSAmI node: Physical node powered by the container
  • Node profile: A configuration of deployable units. It can be based on previously defined profiles.
  • OSAmI system: Set of OSAmI nodes
  • System profiles: Set OSAmI nodes and their profiles

OSAmI demonstrators represented in terms of System profiles allows to demosntrate the OSAmI approach for bridging Architecture and Application domains.

OSAmI Repository

The OSAmI Repositoryis an OSAmI node provided with the services required for the provisioning of deployable entities. Requirements covered or planned for the OSAmI Repository include:

  • Bundle Description Format (OSGi-specific or generic) with support (through a XML descriptor file) for resources and dependencies information (e.g. exported logical resources, dependencies and requirements on the runtime platform)
  • Access hosted bundles or through another repositories
  • Federation with other repositories: (Interoperability to / from other instances, Compatibility with equal / different types of repositories)
  • Easy create, remove, update, delete (CRUD)and search of repository contents
  • Dependencies resolution
  • Web Interface: Browsing capabilities
  • WS Interface: Programmatic management
  • Integration with IDE
  • Matadata persistency. Hibernate layer stored in RDB.

Other related repositories are:

Bundles are described with a POM (xml) file; de facto standard for describing Java projects lifecycle & project structure pushed by Apache projects. Two main available implementations are Apache Archiva, Jfrog Artifactory. Stores all project information: descriptors, source code, and physical artifacts. Repositories are hierarchically federated from local repository to central, multiple repositories. It does not address the expressivity for managing OSGi dependencies (only direct dependencies among projects).

Model for Eclipse-based provisioning released since Eclipse 3.4. Defines three entities; Metadata (derived from traditional Eclipse update sites, installable Units are the internal representation format), Repository (Store of physical artifacts, jar files), Director (deployment engine, dependency resolution). Ant tasks for generating repo structure from an Eclipse product, Automatically derived from MANIFEST.mf, plugin.xml

Maintained by Makewave, developers of OSGi Knopflerfish implementation.

  • OSGi Bundle Reposirory (OBR)

Standardized as OSGi RFC 112. Originally proposed by Richard S. Hall in the OSCAR OSGi implementation(Oscar Bundle Repository)during ITEA OSMOSE project. The specification is client-side centric. Repository Server can be implemented by a plain xml file with the defined elements. Felix and Knopflerfish provide a client service and console // UI shell integrationMaven Bundle Plugin generates an xml file from the local Maven repository which can act as a “local OBR server”

OSGi ready enterprise bundles Provides rich web interface for browsing elements and dependencies that can be accessed as a Maven repository

OSAmI Methodology

In OSAmI we identify three different levels of development: OSAmI Methodology

OSAmI Method

  • OSGi bundle
  • OSAmI service
  • OSAmI application

OSAmI methodology targets supporting the developers in their work while developing in any of these levels.

OSAmI Application

Role: Application Developer. Steps:

  • Set up a new workspace using a development tool (eg: IDE)
    • Select the target OSGi platform (Felix, Equinox; µJonas…) for each node
    • Select the target profile from the OSAmI repository for each node
    • Select the target software license for the project
    • Link with OSAmI repository as one of the dependency resolvers
  • Development
    • Creates Eclipse project (bundle)
    • Assign license for the project (may be inferred from the workspace configuration)
    • Iteratively:
      • Use repository as a catalog to select the right services API (calendar, training…)
      • Have the system solve the package dependencies
      • Codes the application logic
    • Group bundles in composites (Prepare the execution unit)
    • Manually specify the configuration parameters (eg: Jetty port…)
  • Execution
    • Build the deployment plan (resolution), which is an XML file containing (from the composite model + runtime profile):
    • A list of bundles to be deployed with runtime dependencies
    • Configurations to be set to each of the service instances
    • Launch the Runtime Instance (the target OSGi Framework)
    • Setup the instance using the plan

Software Licensing

The diversity of licenses is becoming a big problem in joining forces in development projects. Developers are not lawyers and they usually don't cope with questions around the compatibility licenses under which code to be used has been published. This page is created with the aim to serve as a guide to these developers. Our objective is to gather a collection of reasons one license is compatible or not with another license.

This page is intended to be written collaboratively by largely anonymous Internet volunteers. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or with their real identity, if they choose.

Every contribution may be reviewed or changed. The expertise or qualifications of the user are usually not considered. This is possible since the intention of this page is to cover existing knowledge which is verifiable from other sources. Original research and ideas which have not appeared in other sources are therefore excluded. Anyone is welcome to add information, cross-references, or citations. Licenses compatibility

One of the add values of OSAMI is to offer developers the Licenses Manager Tool that can be downloaded at the Repository

Demonstration Domains

Understanding the Platform

OSAmI has selected a set of social relevant domains to demonstrate the potential benefits of the platform. Vertical scenarios within these domains are analysed in order to identify requirements for a service oriented desing. The exchange of requirements and designs among very diverse scenarios will lead to define "The Commons". An uniform architecture approach and reusable service implementation assets drive a sequence of iterations leading to the convergence. Whith this appproach OSAmI allows for new domains or demonstrators joining the process.

The concept of OSAmI personality is introduced for refering to different perception of the software platform by human users, assuming that many building blocks will be commons across quite different domains.

Demonstrators are defined either:

- As instances of high level domains referred as OSAmI personalities

- or as technology demonstrator addressing transversal issues relevant for the different personalities.

  • Development tools (Ambient Edutainment). Due to the link of the tool with development users these have been included in a separate section.

Tools

Tools are strongly linked to productivity. An open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle is critical for the wide spread adoption of the architecture, and or building applications based on the OSAmI artefacts. A large and vibrant ecosystem of major technology vendors, innovative start-ups, universities, research institutions and individuals extend, complement and support the Eclipse platform with tools. On the other hand, the development platform will be in the long term an instance of the Ambient Intelligence platform for a developer user. Additionally, it must support the required interaction among developers which in many cases will entail overlapping requirements with other type of users. OSAmI Tools will build on and contribute to existing tools platforms such Eclipse, support service platforms such as the OSGi runtimes provided by Eclipse Equinox, Apache Felix, etc, and provide integrated management agents for OSGi service platforms. OSAmI Tools must support the runtimes, frameworks, tools for building, deploying and managing OSAmI software. This will include tools for building Web Applications, Service Creation (OSGi), service implementation technologies such as OSGi bundles, BPM (as in BPEL, BPMN and XPDL), Java and others. OSAmI promotes SOA; this means building frameworks and exemplary extensible tools that enable the design, configuration, assembly, deployment, monitoring, and management of software designed around a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). OSAmI tools must be able leverage standards driven models for SOA, such as Service Component Architecture specification (SCA), and/or JBI. OSAmI Tools are a natural complement to other tools projects, and reuse, extend and add to these projects.
